Back in June, the Progress reported on the Ridge Runner Fire Department’s (RRFD) well project.
At that time, some 39 fire district residents donated enough money to get a well drilled at the fire station. Since then, continued fund-raising efforts have collected enough money from about 50 residents to move forward with phase 2 of the project.
“We placed and wired the pump on Aug. 5,” said RRFD treasurer, Leigh Davis, “and now we have water. We’re excited!”
According to Davis, the well is delivering 30 gallons a minute at the pump, which is enough to fill the station’s water storage tanks and both tanker trucks. A working well, however, is not enough to have a water system. A pressure tank, pipes to the storage tanks, and an insulated pump house are needed to make the system truly viable.
“Our next step is to build a pump house to hold our water tanks and pumping equipment,” said Davis. “We’ve gotten this far thanks to the donations of about 50 fire district residents and a generous donation of $4,000 from Freedom Northwest Credit Union.”
The planned pump house is purported to be about 12×20 feet. It needs to be this size to house all the equipment.
“A community member has donated the concrete work and some materials, and another has agreed to purchase the metal roofing material,” said Davis. “We are still in need of additional materials and labor to complete the project.”
What Davis would like is for more monetary donations so that the RRFD can install a septic, toilet and shower in the building so that the volunteer fireman can clean up after fighting a fire.
“We’re hoping that if we get the septic and peripheral (toilet, sink, shower) donated before the 29th, the contractor can do all the cement work and we can get the bathrooms done at the same time as the pump house foundation is laid,” said Davis.
To get the project finished, the RRFD is having a volunteer workday on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the fire station, Red Fir Road up on Tahoe Ridge. To make a monetary donation, mail it to RRFD, PO Box 262, Kooskia, ID 83539. To donate materials, e-mail email@example.com. To volunteer labor, just show up on the 29th.
