(Editor’s note: In response to a July 30 Progress request to the public for pictures of a yearling moose spotted Wednesday evening, July 22, Joe Sams responded with this story.)
While on an evening kayak run from Kooskia to Kamiah on July 22, we spotted a young moose crossing the river right in front of us. Kaylee Hunt, Miah Sams, Colton Sams, and I (Joe Sams) were together on the river.
We were between the Rock and the Kamiah bridge when we spotted it on the highway side of the river and watched it swim across to the other side, shake off, and walk into the brush. Kaylee had her phone and handed it to Colton to get a video. We then took screen shots of the video for the photos. The moose crossed close enough that we had to back paddle to slow ourselves enough to keep some distance between us and the animal.
Our paths crossed with almost perfect timing, when we were close to the moose and in the middle of the river.
I have spent a lot of time over the years floating the Clearwater, and I’ve seen some neat things, but this was a first for me. It was pretty cool!
