George Junior Berdar of Kamiah was given life on April 23, 1939 in Klein, Mont., giving it back 80 years later on Aug. 14, 2019 at the Life Care Center in Lewiston.
After leaving high school, he joined the Navy, traveling the world as a welder on aircraft carriers. When he returned to the States, he began his construction career, working on dams in Montana, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. It was in 1969 while working on the construction of Dworshak Dam that he decided Kamiah would be the perfect place to settle and call home.
George spent the rest of his career setting up mobile homes, working at area mills, calling out bids at auctions, and saving many distressed folks with his locksmith skills. He believed in service to his community volunteering as an Advanced EMT and fireman for the Kamiah Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed dancing, having coffee at the “Drive In,” hunting, camping, and 4-wheeling with the Camp Creek Bunch and Valley Cats.
His construction talents weren’t limited to welding. He had a passion for woodworking, so in retirement he spent his days making custom furniture for friends and family. Many of his pieces can still be found around town. He was a proud member of the “Grey Haired Construction Crew” that worked for their lunch on projects like the ticket booth and outdoor classroom at the football field. They also moved the bus garage, insulated the maintenance and bus shops, and built trophy cases at the high school along with many other community projects. George was always generous with his knowledge, time and materials.
George will continue to keep an eye on his greatest project, his two grown children. He was extremely proud of son Cliff Berdar (Cindi) and daughter Kelly Berdar. He is also survived by his wife, Kim Berdar, and a granddaughter, Rebecca Berdar.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Life Care Center in Lewiston as well as his numerous doctors for taking care of George over the years. A special thank you to longtime friend Ken Mead for his countless visits.
A Celebration of Life social will be held on Sept. 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Kamiah Fire Station. Desserts will be provided. The family asks that you bring your favorite stories and memories of George to share.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Kamiah Ambulance Fund in memory of George Berdar at Wells Fargo Bank in Kamiah, or a charity of your choice.
As Dad always said, “The main thing is not to get excited.”
