The 2019 Kamiah Valley Historical Community Calendars are in the Museum for purchase. The theme of the calendar this year is “Then and Now.” On each page are two pictures of a business or other building; one picture is from the past, the other is the present. Some history on each picture has also been added.
The Museum will be open this week today, Thursday the 10th, tomorrow, Friday the 11th and next week on Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Historical Community Calendar is our main fundraiser for the year. We ask $10 per calendar which helps us to maintain the building and purchase acid-free materials and other supplies necessary to keep the Museum open.
This is also a mid-winter opportunity for the community to visit the Museum. You may want to come in to see the skull of the Valley’s special bovine, “Babe” with some history about him. Babe was an occasional guest at a variety of events in the Valley such as the Buttermilk Festival; a gentle soul that was loved by many. Babe’s exhibit is a loan and will be in the Museum for a limited time.
Shelley Kuther from Craigmont donated a booklet, “Ye Good Cooking”, which was “Presented with Compliments of The Home Store” in Kamiah. Shelley’s grandparents and parents lived in Kamiah for some years running a Shell gas station (guess where she got her name) in town. Shelley thinks this booklet was given to her family sometime in the early 1920’s around Christmas time by The Home Store.
It includes some recipes from local ladies and advertisements of items that were sold in the store. If anyone has any information regarding “The Home Store,” where it was located on Main Street, the years it was in business, or anything about that time and some of the people who lived here, please let us know.
Remember that the calendars are in and the Museum will be open this Thursday, Friday, following Monday and Tuesday. If our times/days are inconvenient for you, please call Shirlene Yates at (208) 935-2209 or Judy Duclercque at (208) 935-2367 to find a better time/day for you to visit the Museum. Hope to see many of you for our special opening.
