More than half of arrests involving Group A crime in Idaho County last year involved drugs.
Meth would be one drug that is definitely on the rise countywide as the Idaho County Sheriff’s Department has observed its use increase by more than three times from 2014 to 2016.
Last year, 75 of the 139 arrests of adults involved drug activity. These are the highest numbers the county has seen in 10 years. This does not include the 40 DUI arrests by the ICSD.
This is up noticeably from the 60 drug related arrests in 2015. In 2014, there were 33 drug related arrests. The average for the previous seven years was 30 arrests.
Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings declined to comment.
The following data is provided by the Idaho State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Identification report of a compilation of statistics from 108 law enforcement agencies across Idaho in 2016.
Idaho County as a whole had a crime rate of 1,002.1 per 100,000 population, down 5.1% from 2015. Idaho County’s Group A crime rate ranks 34th in the state.
The Idaho County Sheriff’s Department is ranked 26th for crime rates among county offices.
Idaho County has the 13th highest arrest rates for counties at 2,873 per 100,000. Most of their arrests come from traffic stops on Highway 12 or Highway 95.
The ICSD had 295 reported Group A offenses last year, down from 303 offenses in 2015. There were 197 cases cleared. There were a total of 353 arrests in 2016 compared to 358 in 2015.
Some of the Group A offenses included 19 aggravated assaults, 34 cases of burglary, 54 reports of larceny, six motor vehicle thefts, 33 simple assaults, 20 reports of vandalism, and 54 reports of drugs/narcotics, which is up substantially from the 24 cases in 2015. There were also 55 drug equipment offenses. Seventy-five arrests involved drugs out of a total of 139 arrests for the year.
Under the Group B offenses there were 40 arrests for DUI, 12 arrests for disorderly conduct, and 12 liquor law violations.
