Stites Days offered many more events than last year and some were downright interesting.
Single pitch horseshoes started Friday night and the winner of $100 was Bill Jackson.
Double horseshoes started on Saturday morning and was won by Homer and Gary Kleinsmith of Weippe.
The parade was led by VFW veterans Doug Dompier, Gary Orr, Bill Gapski, and Bill West. At the presentation of the flag, three sisters sang the National Anthem: Randi, Brandi and Melissa, daughters of Stephanie Higgs of Harpster.
Then came this year’s Grand Marshals–the Class of 1957 transported in three classic cars. Those who were able to attend were Dean Packer, Gwen Hutchens Wicks, Gary Ulery, Barbara Thompson Pearson, and Lyle Smith.
Winning first place for floats was the Opera House, with an outside façade that looks like the exterior of the building up front, and the inner stage behind that included the Phantom, Terry Raff the Singing Mountain Man, children representing young musicians, dancers and students of martial arts.
On their heels was the Granny Band who sang and played their way through town.
The corn hole toss was won by Jerrica Jackson and Loretta Childers.
The duck race was neck and neck and very fast this year. Mike Jackson said he raised his rubber duck to be a thoroughbred duck and was allowed to enter it with the rest of the ducks. However, his duck never showed at the finish line with the rest of the quarter horse ducks. The winners of the duck race were Jill Hauntz, 1st; Wade Schilling, 2nd; and George Ash, 3rd.
The Poker Run event began with several ATV teams. Starting out at the Stites Bridge, they proceeded up the Stites Grade, followed Battle Ridge to Jericho Road, cut over to Clearwater, did a loop on the old Wagon Road with a final stop at Went Ways, then headed back along the same route, picking up cards to include in their hand along the way. Interestingly enough, the winners of the High Hand and of the Low Hand was the same team! That was Teresa and Carter Schroeder.
The 2nd annual two-man raft race started at 4 p.m., but despite the faster water no one showed for nearly 20 minutes. First place was easily won by reigning champs Steve Shilling and Mike Coons Jr. Krisi Pratt and Loretta Childers took second.
There was a challenge for 3rd place between Bill and Callen Jackson’s team and Jake Schilling and Tyrel Childer’s team. As the two rafts approached the bridge with the Jacksons in the lead, the second raft pulled within 10-15 feet thanks to the use of a snow shovel as an oar. They got even closer as the first raft lodged on river rocks, but the Jacksons managed to free themselves and get moving again just as the 2nd raft got stuck on the same rocks. The Jacksons eked out 3rd place.
The winner of the 3-point basketball was Landon Schlieper.
