This evening while sitting out on my front porch smoking a cigar, I noticed an old fellow who seemed to have difficulty walking, slowly making his way down the hill on the street in front of my house. A Kamiah Marshal’s patrol car was coming up the hill and stopped to talk to the fellow. I could overhear some of the conversation including the officer’s offer of a ride to the old man. The young officer helped the old man into his patrol car, turned around and headed back toward Kamiah.
I moved to Kamiah a little more than a year ago, and almost every day something like this happens to make me glad I did. In my many years on this earth, the incident above was the very first time I’ve ever seen a police officer actually help someone and live up to the “to protect and to serve” motto. These acts of kindness seem to happen often here in Kamiah, and it makes me proud and fortunate to live here. I feel as though I’ve finally come “home.”
