I have supported the District for 29 years and have attended school board meetings for the past year. The District has been discussing the possible lack of Forest Service/SRS funding in the near future. At the last Board meeting I asked Mr. Stokes what the District was doing to prepare for this upcoming shortfall. He replied, we will have to increase the levy amount. Mr. Dominguez, Board chair, stated I should be addressing the Board since they have the final say.
Okay, can the Board explain why for the last school year you paid for 16 exempt vehicle registrations and a few months later at the April Board meeting the Superintendent notified you he had purchased two small pickups for the District? All these vehicles must be insured, require maintenance and fuel – cost unknown. For this same school year, Board reimbursed administrators and staff just under $16,000 for mileage. Should they be reimbursed-ABSOUTELY. But what about all those District vehicles? What are they used for? There was a pause from the Board and a “deer caught in your headlights” moment. Just one area District could make some cuts.
To Mr. Stokes’ credit, he was honest in his reply. After all, why should the District cut back on spending when “ask and he shall receive” has been working so well. Fifty percent of your property tax dollars go to the District not 43% as previously stated. Vote March 14.
